Gracenote Enhances Mobile Offering, Acquires Musicphone

Gracenote has now broadened its mobile capabilities and clientele by acquiring Musicphone, a mobile music recognition firm. Gracenote, a music metadata and information provider, will tap Musicphone to broaden its on-the-go, device-based recognition capabilities. That technology, combined with the Gracenote database, will allow consumers to better identify, research, and purchase music from any location. "We're integrating valuable IVR and commerce technology from Musicphone to enhance our mobile media platform and provide further ecommerce opportunities," said Jim Hollingsworth, senior vice president sales and marketing at Gracenote.

IVR, or Interactive Voice Response, refers to the Musicphone techology that identifies songs using limited snippets. Gracenote is aiming to integrate that functionality into its massive library of song titles, artist biographies, and related information. More immediately, the acquisition allows Gracenote to inherit music recognition relationships with AT&T and Virgin Mobile USA. Other Gracenote mobile partners include KDDI in Japan, SKT and KTF in Korea, and Orange in Europe. The Musicphone deal was first disclosed on Thursday.
